Στην Κύπρο μετέβη ο υφυπουργός Εθνικής Άμυνας, Αλκιβιάδης Στεφανής μαζί με το βουλευτή της Νέας Δημοκρατίας, Κωνσταντίνο Κυρανάκη εκπροσωπώντας την Ελλάδα, στην τελετή παράδοσης των οστών του Αντιστράτηγου, Στυλιανού Καλμπουρτζή, ο οποίος έπεσε μαχόμενος κατά την τουρκική εισβολή στην Κύπρο το καλοκαίρι του 1974.

Μετά από 47 χρόνια προσπάθειας της οικογένειάς του για την εύρεση και την ταυτοποίηση του Αντιστράτηγου, οι δυο κόρες του, Μαρία και Αφροδίτη Καλπουρτζή συνόδευσαν το οστεοφυλάκιο και απέδωσαν μαζί με την πολιτική και στρατιωτική ηγεσία Ελλάδας και Κύπρου, τις τιμές που αρμόζουν σε έναν πραγματικό ήρωα.

Ο βουλευτής της Νέας Δημοκρατίας δήλωσε:

“Η θυσία και ο θάνατος του Αντιστράτηγου Καλμπουρτζή αποτελεί σημείο αναφοράς για κάθε Αξιωματικό ή οπλίτη που υπηρετεί τις Ένοπλες Δυνάμεις, αποδεικνύοντας ότι το τίμημα της ελευθερίας είναι πάντοτε πολύ υψηλό. Ο Στυλιανός Καλπουρτζής έδωσε πραγματική και άνιση μάχη απέναντι στον Τούρκο εισβολέα, θυσιάζοντας τη δική του ζωή για την πατρίδα, αλλά και σώζοντας τις ζωές των στρατιωτών του.
